The Toughest Virtual Internship in Africa? Yes, HNG

I joined the Node.js Backend track, and it’s already very tough, even though we’ve only started.

The HNG Internship is an ambitious attempt to change the way education is done in Africa. It’s the bridge between learning to code, and becoming the best in the world.

This internship is not for beginners, and it’s barely for intermediate developers. Even though it’s for Africans, it’s open to anyone from any part of the world.

Why did I join HNG?

  • To complete the program and earn some bragging rights
  • To make friends with people of like mind
  • To build more Node.js applications and add them to my portfolio
  • To become an Advanced or Senior developer.

Is HNG beginner friendly?

No, it’s not. If you’re a beginner, this internship is not for you. Why? You’ll be completely overwhelmed by the amount of pressure and you’ll find yourself kicked out of the program before you know it.

So where can you start?

  • If you’re interested in becoming a UI/UX Designer, then I strongly suggest that you use Figma. You can start your design journey using this Figma Tutorial for Beginners is a good start.
  • If you’re looking into software development, then you absolutely need to learn how to use Git and Github, it’s as important as being able to type. You can use this Git tutorial to get started.
  • If you’re looking into building websites, then you need to learn HTML. This is the skeleton of all or almost all the websites in the world. You can start by using this awesome HTML tutorial for Beginners
  • If you’re interested in building servers, APIs, and web related softwares that controls how a website works, then you should definitely consider Node.js. A good place to start this journey is by watching this Node.js Tutorial for Beginners.
